WALKING FOR HEALTH
The People and Nature Survey for Wales: 2021 – 2022 found that when asked about the reason for visiting greenspace, 53% said for physical health and exercise whilst 41% said for their mental health and wellbeing. Overall, 85% of people felt that being in nature makes them happy.
The National Survey for Wales during 2024-25, showed that 52% of people said they walked for at least 10 minutes or more to get somewhere at least once a week, a similar proportion to 2021-22 and 2022-23. Meanwhile, 35% of people said they want to do more sport or physical activity, an increase from 27% in 2022-23.
- Dress for the weather: Wear warm, layered clothing and waterproofs.
- Wear sturdy footwear: Paths may be wet, muddy, or uneven.
- Stay visible: Choose bright or reflective clothing, especially in low light.
- Take a torch or headlamp if walking later in the day.
- Bring water (and a snack for longer routes).
- Plan for daylight: Winter days are short—allow plenty of time.
- Take care on roads:
- Walk facing oncoming traffic where there is no pavement
- Stay alert on narrow or winding sections
- Check conditions: Weather and ground conditions can change quickly
- Walk with someone if possible, or let someone know your plans
Walking with Dogs
- Keep dogs under close control at all times
- Use a lead when near livestock or wildlife
- Always clean up after your dog
- Follow local signage, especially on working farmland
Respect the Landscape
- Take all litter home with you—bins may be limited
- Leave gates as you find them
- Stick to marked paths to protect habitats
- Respect wildlife, livestock and other walkers
